Having just written a short blog on the balance between my two legs, I remember that balance is overrated when it comes to activity and rest. Balance is technically stasis, holding between being upright and falling, between two sides of a scale. Up/down, up/down is the rhythm of life, the cycle through which we all move and so, instead of balance, I think I’d rather strive for harmony – if I’m watching an orchestra, they might be striving for balance between the loudness and softness of different instruments so the orchestra blends together, but all the players are alternately busy and restful, creating a beautiful harmonious whole, with movements between fast and slow, silence and sound, loud and soft and high and low. I think I’d rather be harmonious in action than static in balance. Balance is overrated – let’s play some beautiful music instead.
